Let me get this straight....4 days ago, an NFL player kills his friend and teammate in a drunk driving car accident, and was on the practice field today?!?! I am sure Josh Brent is overcome with guilt and regret for the actions he took leading to the death of his friend, and for that I respect the Cowboys for standing by their player in letting him know he is supported and not alone....I can't even imagine what could be going through his mind.
Now let's get to the actual issue at hand. The man is charged with Vehicular Manslaughter and faces a potentially lengthy term in prison. How is there nothing in place that doesn't block the player from returning after a) violating alcohol policies. b) getting charged with a felony involving the DEATH of someone c) protecting the player himself?!
Only a week earlier, The Chiefs faced a tragedy when Jovan Belcher took his own life. Brady Quinn had the most poignant comments addressing how do we really know what is going on in someones head. Right now, nobody knows what is going on in Josh Brent's head, but I can be pretty sure it is not good. Pro calibre athletes live their lives under more pressure than most people will ever see in a lifetime. When you exist like that, it is understandable to "snap". Now I am not saying Josh Brent is a danger to himself right now, but the league should protect the player, the team, and the NFL by respecting the circumstances in this man's life right now. DO NOT allow him on the field. If not as punishment for violation of league conduct policies, if not for breaking the law, for the simple fact that the man needs some time. His teammates are showing true class by showing their support for him. That is where it should stay. Let him face this challenge as Josh Brent the man, not Josh Brent another tragic NFL conduct tragedy.
